One of the most popular launch monitors launched on the market in 2023 is the Skytrak+. This device has gained a reputation for accuracy and ease of use since its predecessor launch back in 2014, making it a favorite among golfers of all skill levels. It has also brought a plethora of improvements.

In this article, we’ll take a closer look at the Skytrak+ launch monitor and provide a comprehensive review of its features and performance.

So, let’s get started!

Original SkyTrak Weaknesses

Original SkyTrak

Despite its huge success and popularity, the original SkyTrak had some significant weaknesses. One issue was the lack of club data, which meant that you weren’t getting a full understanding of your swing and how to improve it. Additionally, there was a shot delay (around two seconds), which made it difficult to get accurate feedback on your ball flight and launch angle. This delay was particularly frustrating when practicing at a driving range or trying to adjust your swing mid-round.

Another shortcoming of the original SkyTrak was that it was prone to missed shots, meaning that it would miss some shots or misinterpret the data, leading to confusion for the user. The device’s performance outdoors was also criticized, as many users experienced difficulty getting accurate readings when practicing outside. Finally, the original SkyTrak had a relatively small hitting area, which made it challenging to pick up balls that were hit off-center.

These shortcomings made the original SkyTrak a less popular choice compared to some of its competitors. However, the new SkyTrak+ has made significant improvements in all these areas, providing golfers with a more accurate and reliable launch monitor experience.

SkyTrak+ Improvements

This upgraded version of the original SkyTrak offers a few notable improvements that enhance your golf game.

First, the larger hitting area allows for more freedom and a better overall experience when practicing at home. You don’t have to worry about your shots not being tracked due to hitting outside of a smaller area.

The new onboard processor also brings faster calculations and instant feedback for each swing taken. This is great for allowing you to make quick adjustments to your technique and improve your skills in real time.

The 5GHz Wi-Fi capability offers you secure connectivity with SkyTrak’s app. It allows you to monitor your progress and access advanced technologies. With USB-C charging, you’ll be back up and running quickly, offering rapid charging capabilities.

Finally, one of the most significant improvements is the combination of photometric tracking with a Doppler radar system to provide pinpoint accuracy both indoors and out.

Unboxing and Setup the SkyTrak+

When you unbox the SkyTrak+, you will find the launch monitor, USB-C cable, power brick, and user manual.

After that, you can connect your mobile device or computer to the monitor. You can do this by following the instructions provided on the SkyTrak+ mobile app or computer software.

Remember to calibrate the monitor before use to ensure the most accurate readings.

SkyTrak+ Features

Let’s now go through the main features of the new Skytrak + and see the improvements it brought over its predecessor.

Improved Accuracy

The SkyTrak+ has undergone some major improvements that have taken its accuracy to another level compared to the original version. These updates include enhancements to the internal software and algorithms that were already strong in the previous model.

skytrak game improvement

The improved accuracy of the SkyTrak+ has maximized the device’s precision in multiple aspects, such as club head speed, ball speed, launch angle, and spin rate.

Check Also: How Accurate Are Golf Simulators?

Compared to its predecessor and competitors, the SkyTrak+ has surpassed in terms of accuracy with its reliable data measurements. These measurements now generate optimal launch conditions, giving realistic effects to each shot and including a better-projected trajectory.

Moreover, the device’s advanced features allow you to customize the settings based on your skill level. You can choose from the range of shots that the device can monitor, using real golf balls, practice balls, and even special balls used for skill-level training.

Larger Hitting Area

SkyTrak+ boasts a larger hitting area than its competitors, ensuring a more enjoyable and realistic golf experience. The hitting area measures 5 inches wide and 6 inches long (40% larger than its predecessor), providing ample space for you to hit your shots comfortably.

For optimal results, it’s essential to use real golf balls and a sturdy hitting mat and net. The SkyTrak+ can be set up in a range of spaces, but you’ll need about 10 feet of clearance in front of the device to take a full swing safely. The inclusion of these critical elements in your practice setup will help you achieve accurate and consistent launch conditions.

Club Metrics

SkyTrak+ can measure various club metrics to help you understand your swing and achieve optimal launch conditions.

skytrak play mode

One of the crucial club metrics that SkyTrak+ measures is club head speed. It is the speed at which your clubhead is moving during impact with the ball. This metric is important for determining the distance you can hit the ball.

Another significant club metric that the SkyTrak+ measures is the smash factor. It is the ratio between your ball speed and club head speed. A high smash factor means efficient energy transfer, resulting in better ball flight and distance.

The SkyTrak+ also measures club path and face angle. Club path is the vertical angle of your clubhead during the swing, while the face angle is the direction your clubface points during impact. These measures help you understand if your swing is on the optimal path and help to fix your slice or hook.

Finally, the club compare feature, within the Club fitting software segment, allows you to see the difference between your clubs and help you decide which ones to use for various shots.

Shot Optimizer

The SkyTrak+ launch monitor uses the Shot Optimizer feature, designed to enhance your golf game. The interface presents your club and ball data in an easily digestible format, coupled with red, yellow, and green scores that help you compare your results to optimal launch conditions.

Shot Optimizer provides a range of metrics to assess your shot quality, including carry and total distance, face-to-target, and club path data. Heat maps display your club’s measurements and ideal ranges, giving you a quick overview of your performance. You can also compare your scores with those of other players with different skill levels.

Use Shot Optimizer to analyze your golf club and ball data against optimal launch conditions. The simple interface and color-coded scores enable you to make efficient adjustments and improve every golf shot.

Dual Doppler Radar

SkyTrak+ is a game-changer in golf simulator technology due to its new and innovative Dual Doppler Radar system. This cutting-edge technology provides you with accurate data on an array of factors such as ball speed, launch angle, ball flight, and club path. SkyTrak+ uses the data to create realistic golf simulation that realistically captures the nuances of real-life play.

One major benefit of the Dual Doppler Radar system is that it captures valuable Club Data, including important information about your swing such as clubhead speed, angle of attack, and club path. Having this data allows you to analyze and improve your swing and ultimately improve your game.

Other radar-based golf simulators such as Trackman and Flightscope units require more space and are generally more expensive than the compact SkyTrak+ system.

SkyTrak + Software

Skytrak Plus Software

SkyTrak+ offers several software options, including the Basic Driving Range Software, the Game Improvement Software, and Play & Improve Software plans. As you can see, the Skytrak+ uses the same software options as its predecessor, which we believe was a good call, as game-improvement and feature-rich software was one of the main attractions of Skytrak; no need to change a formula that works great!

The Basic Software provides instant feedback on your shots, with your club and ball data with the possibility to practice on a virtual driving range.

The Game Improvement Software offers even more tracking and analysis, including club path and a wider range of shots. It offers mainly additional features geared toward practice and game improvement. A valid subscription to this software is required if you want to access other 3rd party software like E6 Connect, TGC 2019, GSPro, Creative Golf 3D, etc (with additional costs).

The Play & Improve Software allows you to access one of the top golf simulation software, playing on real courses or custom ones. It comes with additional features as well as the WGT Golf software to access full course play on the most renowned golf courses worldwide both in single-player, multiplayer and online modes.

With SkyTrak+ Software, you can enjoy practice range features, virtual driving ranges, and quality golf simulator setups without the need for special balls or stickers on clubs.

5GHz Wifi

A steady internet connection is essential for a smooth golfing experience. With this enhanced Wifi connectivity, you can be sure to have a reliable and uninterrupted experience during your practice sessions.

Whether you are using it for game improvement through virtual driving range practice or for golf simulation, the SkyTrak+ launch monitor’s 5GHz Wifi ensures an uninterrupted experience.

USB-C Charging

SkyTrak+’s USB-C charging function replaces the previous micro-USB power cable. This upgrade is a significant relief for those who experienced issues with the original power cable. The introduction of USB-C charging and the Rapid Charging feature ensures faster and more efficient charging, reducing downtime between practice sessions.

With USB-C charging, you can charge your SkyTrak+ using a variety of chargers rather than being tied to one specific charger. The Rapid Charging feature ensures that your device can be charged in record time, providing a seamless practice experience without interruptions due to low battery.

Also, the orientation of the USB-C cable doesn’t matter anymore (as opposed to micro USB); it will work no matter the orientation.

Club Stickers Not Required

Unlike other monitors, SkyTrak+ doesn’t need any club head stickers. This is not only beneficial for the visually-minded golfer, but it also saves time and money. You can just grab your clubs and get to work.

For club-fitting businesses, this feature can be a game-changer. No need to apply stickers whenever new clubs are used or different customers try out various clubs, which will save a lot of time and energy. Not only can they use it to help their clients find the best fit, but they can also market their services as using the latest and most accurate technology available.

SkyTrak+ Improved Shot Accuracy

skytrak on driving range

With its state-of-the-art Doppler radar and optical tracking systems and advanced algorithms, the SkyTrak+ offers an unprecedented level of shot accuracy, providing you with insightful feedback on your game.

The tracking system embedded in the SkyTrak+ is incredibly accurate, with a precision of within 0.5 yards, making it one of the most accurate launch monitors on the market. This improved accuracy means that you can trust the data provided to you and work on the areas where you need to improve.

In addition, SkyTrak+ tracks club path and club face data to provide deeper insights into your swing mechanics and impact position. This feature helps you identify the strengths and weaknesses in your stroke and adjust accordingly. Knowing where your clubface is at impact can also help you improve your ball flight and increase your carry distance for optimal launch conditions.

What I Like About the SkyTrak+ Launch Monitor

The SkyTrak+ Launch Monitor, in my experience, is an exceptionally precise and reliable tool for golfers of all levels. One of the features I appreciate most is its accuracy in delivering ball and club head data, providing golfers with reliable information that can help refine their swings. The lack of gimmicks is another factor that sets this launch monitor apart from others, as it delivers only honest feedback that golfers can trust.

I also liked the fact that the SkyTrak+ Launch Monitor’s proximity to stance setup was ideal for me, and I didn’t need to go through the hassle of sticking stickers on my clubs to get the data I needed.

Furthermore, the quality of the golf simulator setups is second to none. With its advanced technologies and onboard processor, I was able to enjoy realistic courses, accurate distance and carry data, skills challenges, and game improvement features. The rapid charging and secure connectivity make it an excellent choice for outdoor use, while support for the E6 Connect software (and other simulation software) provides the best combination of excellent graphics, game mechanics and game-improvement features.

Finally, the price! Being able to integrate so much technology and innovation in Skytrak + and still managing to keep the cost under $3,000 was an achievement. At $2,995, it is about $1,000 more expensive than its predecessor, but it is at the same time much cheaper than the launch monitors it is competing against.

What I Don’t Like About the SkyTrak+ Launch Monitor

Skytrak + took its predecessor’s formula and enhanced it with improved features and hardware components. It kept the original Skytrak’s forte- its support for multiple simulation software options, and providing multiple features and game modes to help improve your game. It also focused on fixing its predecessor’s flaws, and now tracks the ball and club and provides more accurate data points.

There is almost nothing to complain about with the Skytrak+ launch monitor, almost nothing! My only issue is with the integration of 3rd party software, which requires a valid license for the Game Improvement Plan or the Play & Improve Plan with WGT, costing around $130 and $250 annually, respectively. In addition, you are required to pay between $300 and $600 a year for different plans of E6 Connect, or an additional $995 for a one-time payment for TGC 2019.

Opting for third-party software substantially raises the investment.

SkyTrak+ Price & Options

For this price, you’ll get access to an accurate launch monitor that can record your launch angle, ball speed, club path, club head speed, and more. With the ability to connect to your mobile device, you’ll be able to review your data immediately after each swing.

SkyTrak+ Protective Case

skytrak+ protective case

To ensure your monitor remains in top condition, it’s essential to safeguard it against potential damage. That’s where the SkyTrak+ Protective Case comes in.

Made of high-density polyethylene, this case provides exceptional impact resistance against your fastest ball strikes. This means you can enjoy your shots without worrying about accidentally hitting your valuable launch monitor.

The SkyTrak+ Protective Case is a must-have if you plan on using your launch monitor with multiple golfers. The added protection will give you the peace of mind you need to enjoy your game. This case is custom-designed for the SkyTrak+ and is easy to transport, making it an ideal companion for golfers who travel frequently.
