#2 - Foresight Sports GC3 Flex Space Package

foresight sports gc3

Our second pick is one that provides tour-level data and performance through the GC3 launch monitor coupled with a retractable screen that can be deployed and retracted in a matter of seconds to help save ground space.

The GC3 is an amazing launch monitor that utilizes a triple-camera photometric system to track your golf ball and club and provide instant feedback in the form of extremely accurate data points. These include launch angle, side angle, ball speed, total spin, club head speed, smash factor, club path, etc. You get more than enough metrics to take your game to the next level. Also, you can record your golf shots and replay the videos with data overlay.

The package comes with FSX 2020 and FSX Play software that provide many useful challenges, game modes, and online competitions. You can also go for the Player Plus Software addon, which gives you access to an additional 11 world-renowned courses like Pebble Beach and Spyglass Hill (among others) to enjoy in stunning graphics with a resolution of up to 4K. Realism and immersion are guaranteed with this system!

The included HomeCourse Pro Retractable Screen is made of sturdy materials to ensure durability. It is also designed with battery-operated motors that help deploy and retract the whole thing; something extremely handy, especially if you don’t want to dedicate space to your package. Everything can be taken out of the way in no time, and the space will be usable for any other daily activities. With this package, you will be getting tour-level accuracy for a relatively good price. If money is not a problem for you, you can consider the big brother, Foresight Sports’ latest and greatest – the Foresight Sports GCQuad Flex Space and enjoy a plethora of additional features.

It is recommended to have a room with 12′ in width, 12′ in length and 8’6″ in ceiling height to use the package comfortably.

#3 - FlightScope X3 Retractable Screen Package

flightscope x3 retractable screen

Another professional- grade launch monitor makes it to our list. The X3 is FlightScope’s most advanced launch monitor to date. The company’s patented Fusion Tracking system uses  Doppler radar technology combined with the built-in camera to provide some of the most accurate metrics of your ball and club; you get a jaw-dropping 50+ data points and get to choose which ones to display over your recorded videos to get the most out of your practice sessions.

The launch monitor has an internal battery that allows it to be used for up to 10 hours; this also means the unit can be used both indoors and out.

The package comes with a rather basic subscription to Trugolf’s E6 connect simulator software, which is considered to be one of the best and most visually pleasing software available for golf simulation. You get 6 fully playable courses, 17 virtual practice ranges, and plenty of game-improvement challenges and game modes.

You can get even more courses and features by getting the expanded subscription plan of E6 Connect (+ 600 dollars), or you can make a one-time payment of 995 dollars and get access to TGC 2019 and its huge course library.

The Home Course Pro 180 Retractable Simulator Screen is durable and sturdy enough to stop your fastest shots, and it includes the Sky Netting and Pro Arms to provide protection from errant shots. The screen can be mounted on the ceiling or back walls and is wirelessly controlled via the included remote, making it extremely easy to deploy and retract.

The included 6′ X 10′ Net Return Pro Golf Turf is designed to allow the ball to return to the player after impact, and it’s optionally upgradeable to other Fiberbuilt options of three different sizes.

Upgrade options are things we absolutely love from our friends at Top Shelf Golf, as almost everything can be upgraded. You can choose one of two options for the golf projector: the Optoma EH412ST (+ 1189 dollars) or the ZH406ST laser projector of the same brand (+ 1999 dollars), with the laser option being more suitable for use in areas with more ambient lighting thanks to its higher lumen count and contrast ratio. However, both options are excellent and will provide outstanding image quality.

What’s included

  • FlightScope X3 launch monitor & accessories
  • Trugolf E6 Connect basic subscription – upgradable to extended subscription or to TGC 2019
  • Home Course Pro 180 Retractable Simulator Screen & mounting system
  • Net Return Pro Golf Turf – upgradable to Fiberbuilt options
  • Choice of simulator projector
  • Optional projector ceiling mount or floor enclosure

Pros

  • More than 50 parameters of long and short gameplay provided with pinpoint accuracy.
  • Fusion Tracking combining two tracking technologies for better and more accurate data
  • The E6 Connect software is visually stunning
  • Retractable design to help save space
  • A lot of upgradability and personalization options

Cons

  • The X3 launch monitor, being a radar Doppler unit, requires more room depth for a more accurate tracking

The FlightScope X3 Retractable Screen Package is an outstanding system that offers professional performance and a huge number of metrics and makes them available for nonprofessional players. It is a bit more expensive than other packages on the list, but offers the latest and greatest that golf simulator technology has to offer today. Moreover, the amount of upgradability of software and hardware components make this package the best choice for those seeking to have their own “unique” simulator package.

#4 - Uneekor Eye XO Retractable Package

retractable screen eye xo

Uneekor is a South Korean brand that has made a name for itself in the world of virtual golf. It exclusively manufactures overhead launch monitors, ones attached to the ceiling, and offer seamless hand or player switching without the need to touch anything.

The Eye XO is the company’s flagship system that provides accurate metrics of your shots thanks to its dual camera system (running at over 3,000 FPS) coupled with Infrared sensors. You will be able to record and replay videos of your shots to see what you’re doing right or wrong. You’ll get more than 20 club and ball data in total.

The HomeCourse Retractable Simulator Enclosure system allows you to use a remote control to deploy and retract the screen in less than a minute. This allows you to use the available space for other purposes. Moreover, it comes with the HomeCourse Sky Netting and Pro-Arms for extended safety. The SwingTurf Golf Mat is designed to be comfortable and easy on the joints so that you enjoy your pain-free virtual golf experience.

The full turf covering between the tee point and screen adds to the aesthetics of the package and allows for easier ball returns.

The included 1080P Optoma EH460ST Projector provides good image and color quality to help you get immersed in the virtual surroundings, and the included simulation software – TGC 2019 – offers accurate reproductions of your favorite courses. It has a huge course library of over 150 000, and a course rating system, meaning that you will always find new courses to play golf and enjoy, be it in single or multiplayer modes. If you don’t like fiddling around, you can optionally include a powerful gaming laptop to run your software flawlessly.

What’s included

  • Uneekor Eye XO launch monitor, mounting system & cables
  • Uneekor View Software
  • TGC 2019 Golf Simulation Software
  • Retractable Screen & Enclosure
  • Choice of Hitting Mat
  • 5’x10’7″ Landing Turf x2
  • 25′ HDMI Cable
  • Ball Tray
  • Birtees Pack
  • Optoma EH460ST Short Throw Projector
  • SwingShield Projector Floor Enclosure
  • Golf Simulation Gaming Laptop (optional)
  • Laptop Stand
  • Laptop Sleeve & Mousepad

Pros

  • Overhead design that keeps the monitor away from potential damage
  • Great space saver
  • Great performance
  • Huge course library
  • No need to mark balls to track them

Cons

  • A bit on the expensive side

The Uneekor Eye XO Retractable Package is a good option if you want a system that doesn’t require too much ground space. The screen, monitor and possibly projector can all be mounted to the ceiling for a cleaner playing area. The package is expensive, but it’s totally worth every penny thanks to the performance and features you get in return. However, if you can’t afford this package, we suggest you go for its little brother, the Uneekor QED Retractable Simulator Package and save some bucks.

The guys at Rain Or Shine Golf recommend a space of 9’H x 11’W x 16’D for the package. Still, we believe that you can use it in a slightly smaller room.

#5 - Skytrak SIG8 Golf Simulator

SkyTrak SIG 8

We had to include in our list a simulator that strikes the perfect balance between price and performance. The Skytrak launch monitor is known to provide a great deal of value and performance that is comparable to that of launch monitors that cost at least twice or three times its price.

Skytrak is a photometric unit that relies on its hyper-speed camera system to track your golf ball and provide metrics with pinpoint accuracy. You get direct readings of your ball speed, launch angle, back spin, side spin, and side angle. These data points are then used to calculate things like carry, roll and total distances, distance offline, clubhead speed, angle of descent, flight path, apex height, and hang time. These are all used as the basis for the final simulation outcome, which is pretty realistic and immersive.

This specific package comes with Skytrak’s more advanced software – the Play & Improve Plan, which provides access to 12 world-famous golf courses through WGT, multiplayer and online play and plenty of game modes with skill assessment features and challenges.

The SIG8 is Shop Indoor Golf’s smaller golf enclosure (compared to SIG10 golf simulator and SIG12, but it provides an excellent performance thanks to the high quality and durability of its materials (Tight Knit Polyester and powder-coated steel). It measures 8’4″H x 8’4″W x 5′ D and has blacked screen side walls to help the projected image pop out. The impact screen is designed to provide a 4:3 aspect ratio image that covers 80% of its surface. The included Full HD projector will surely add to the realism of the entire experience.

The included Fairway Series golf mat is 5′ x 5′ and can be upgraded to the 4’X7′ SIGPro mat or to the majestic SIG8 Golf Simulator Flooring, which covers the entire playing area. Sadly, the latter is out of the question due to the space limitations that most readers of this article probably have.

What’s included

  • Skytrak launch monitor, protective metallic case, Micro USB charging cable, and Play & Improve software.
  • SIG8 Simulator enclosure
  • Side barrier netting
  • Choice of hitting mat
  • Landing pad Turf
  • Full HD projector & ceiling mount
  • 15′ HDMI cable & Lightning adapter
  • User manual & quick start guide

Pros

  • Unbeatable value, as usual with Skytrak packages
  • Pinpoint accuracy
  • Good quality components = extended durability
  • Very good image quality (projector & impact screen)
  • Plenty of challenges and game modes

Cons

  • Skytrak only tracks the ball; no club data measured

The Skytrak SIG8 system is our top pick because it checks all the boxes in our topic. It fits in a smaller space and performs exceptionally well without breaking the bank. The package offers great value in that you get much more than what you pay for. No wonder Skytrak is one of the most popular launch monitors in the world!

To house this simulator package, you will need a recommended space of 18′ D x 12′ W x 9′ H, but you can make things work in a smaller space, taking into consideration some factors that we will be discussing later in this same article.

#6 - Garmin Approach R10 Bronze Package

garmin bronze

The Approach R10 Bronze Package is an affordable home golf system that offers great value for the money. It is built around the Approach R10 launch monitor, which is surprisingly tiny and full of features and capabilities. It can measure over a dozen metrics related to the ball and club surprisingly accurately, mainly thanks to the use of Doppler radar technology.

The R10 is very portable thanks to its small size and light weight, and its battery life of 10 hours will ensure it will never run out of juice mid-game. It can also be used indoors, as well as on the course or driving range. The device also takes advantage of your smartphone’s capabilities to help you automatically record videos of your shots for future reference. Just place the phone in the included phone bracket and leave the rest for the launch monitor. You will be able to save, share and upload your training sessions through the Garmin App.

If you get a subscription to the app, you will have access to over 42,000 virtual courses from around the world. However, if you content yourself with what’s included in the package, you will still be able to play 5 courses on the IOS version of E6 Connect; not bad for a free addition!

The rest of the package is composed of the Net Return Pro Series golf net (and impact screen), the SIGPRO turf mat and a Full HD 1080P simulator projector to enjoy your virtual experience. The net and mat are specifically designed to return the ball to your feet after impact, which is really convenient.

What’s included

  • Approach R10, phone mount, tripod stand, micro USB cable, & carry case
  • Free membership trial of the Garmin Golf App
  • SIGPRO 6′ x 10′ Turf Mat
  • 15′ HDMI Cable & Lightning to HDMI Adapter
  • Net Return Pro Series V2 Net & Frame
  • Side Barriers & Golf Simulator Screen
  • 1080p HD Short Throw Golf Simulator Projector
  • Projector Shield (projector floor mount enclosure)

Pros

  • Extremely affordable package
  • Easy to install
  • Portable monitor with long battery life
  • Automatic ball return design
  • Access to 5 free E6 courses out of the box, and a whopping 42,000+ with a subscription to Garmin Golf

Cons

  • Nothing we could find

The Garmin Approach R10 Bronze Package is ideal for those wishing to squeeze the best value out of their investment. It is a highly portable system with lightweight components and a launch monitor that could fit in your pocket and go with you anywhere you want. This is a surprisingly good package mainly due to the great value provided by the R10 launch monitor.

#7 - FlightScope Mevo + Practice Golf Simulator Package

mevo+ practice

This next package is based on the direct competitor to Skytrak. We may confidently say that the Mevo Plus launch monitor is what Skytrak would be if it used Doppler radar technology. In fact, both launch monitors belong to the same price range and offer great value for the money.

The Mevo + is FlightScope’s budget- oriented option, which means that it’s affordable for most golfers. It uses radar to track 16 parameters of your shots and can be paired with your smart device to use its camera to record videos and replay them with data overlay. The tracked data is quite accurate for such a little and affordable device. It also provides multiple skills challenges and can be used inside and out.

This is a “Practice package”, meaning that it doesn’t include a projector or screen. You get a golf net and mat instead. You can connect the launch monitor to a laptop or smart device to get feedback on your progress. If you don’t have a problem with checking your data on your phone, then this is a good and affordable training package to help you practice and improve; and the good thing is that it is extremely easy to move around or even use outdoors when the weather is nice enough.

The combination of the Net Return Pro V2 golf net and the 5′ x 5′ Swing Turf hitting mat & landing pad turf, also upgradeable to other size options, means that all you need to think about is swinging your club the best way possible; the ball is then returned to you automatically.

What’s included

  • Mevo+ Launch Monitor, Carrying Case, FlightScope App
  • Choice of simulation software: E6 Connect or TGC 2019
  • The Net Return Pro V2 Series Hitting Net
  • Landing Pad Turf (5′ x 8′)
  • Laptop Sleeve & Mousepad
  • iPad Pro or Gaming Laptop (optional)
  • iPad or Laptop Stand
  • Ball Tray
  • 25′ HDMI Cable

Pros

  • Affordable package
  • Very good performance
  • Excellent for practicing indoors or outdoors
  • Possibility to purchase components you need only

Cons

  • Room depth requirement is a bit excessive (as with all radar units)

The FlightScope Mevo Plus Practice Package is suitable for those who don’t need all the bells and whistles in their golf simulator. You get what you need to practice and improve your golf game without breaking the bank. If you wish, you may get a cheap projector and screen combo if you feel like enjoying a virtual round of golf with your friends or family. Whatever you do, this package will remain budget-friendly.

#8 - Skytrak SwingBay Simulator Package

swingbay skytrack

Another package that uses Skytrak – golfers’ favorite value launch monitor- coupled with Rain Or Shine Golf’s premium enclosure – Swing Bay.

Skytrak uses a high-speed camera to track your golf ball and provide around 15 accurate data metrics without the need to spend too much money. It comes with plenty of challenges and game modes, and is compatible with the majority of simulation software available today thanks to its wide popularity. Just remember that purchasing your favorite software must be done from within the Skytrak interface after you register your product to avoid any potential problems.

This specific system comes with Skytrak’s mid-range software plan – the Game Improvement Plan – which includes additional challenges and features like bag mapping, the wedge matrix, practice randomizer, etc. It’s up to you to see if the included plan is enough for your requirements, or if a software upgrade is to be planned.

The crown jewel in this package, in my own opinion, is the Swing Bay enclosure. It is relatively smaller in size, but it’s crafted using top-of-the-line materials to offer the best possible durability and performance. It can withstand thousands of shots of up to 250 MPH.

The blacked-out walls around the screen are designed to help get the best possible image even in spaces with a lot of ambient lighting. The SwingTurf Golf Mat is available in 5′ x 5′ and 4′ x 9′ sizes and makes playing virtual golf more comfortable; it also provides a real life-like feel closer to what you get on a real golf course. The turf also covers the entire playing area, making the setup much more visually appealing.

In addition, you get a full HD 1080P Optoma simulator projector with the possibility to cover the entire screen with the projected image. You also get to choose between a ceiling mount or a floor enclosure for your projector to keep it safe from any mishaps.

If you wish, you can get a gaming laptop with your purchase, which will run the simulation process without stutter or lag for an even better golf simulator experience. The good news is the laptop is optimized for The Golf Club 2019, which we consider to be the best simulation option in terms of value.

The absolute minimum space requirements to use the package are 8′ H x 10′ 6″ W x 16′ D, while the recommended dimensions are 9′ H x 12′ W x 16′ D.

What’s included

  • Skytrak launch monitor, protective case, Skytrak App & Game Improvement software, and necessary cables.
  • SwingBay Hitting Enclosure, side netting & Screen
  • 25′ HDMI Cable
  • Birtees & Ball Tray
  • 2 x 5’x10’7″ Landing Pad Turf
  • Choice of Golf Mat Size
  • Optoma 1080p Short-Throw Projector
  • Projector Floor Enclosure or Ceiling Mount
  • Gaming laptop, stand, sleeve, and mousepad (optional)

Pros

  • Great quality components
  • Easy installation
  • Good value for the money
  • Premium hitting bay made from durable materials
  • Excellent image quality
  • The enclosure will fit in smaller spaces

Cons

  • The launch monitor only tracks the ball, not the club

The Skytrak Swing Bay Golf Simulator Package is an excellent system that combines a great value launch monitor with a premium-grade enclosure, and the result is awesome. The package is a bit pricey compared to other systems (mainly because of the enclosure), but the quality and performance you get from the package far exceed what you pay for, making the home golf simulator setup totally worth it.

#9 - Foresight Sports GCQuad Training Package

foresight sports gcquad training

If you want to have the absolute best in terms of accuracy, performance, and tracked data points, and you don’t really care about having the bells and whistles, then this training setup is worth considering. It will be the best option if your ultimate goal is to practice and get feedback both indoors and out, as the GCQuad is a portable monitor that can operate on its built-in battery for up to 10 hours. The battery is also easily removable and replaceable, which means that you can have a fully charged, spare battery to use in case the one being used dies out (not that we think you will ever need to do this).

The GCQuad is Foresight Sports’ greatest and most technologically advanced launch monitor to date. As the name suggests, the unit uses four high-speed cameras combined with Infrared sensors to measure the slightest details of your shots and provide pinpoint accuracy for your ball and club metrics.

The unit is perfect for use in a training setup or even outdoors on the course or driving range because it can be either paired with a smart device to show your collected data, or even better, use the GCQuad’s perfectly positioned display to get instant feedback immediately after hitting the ball. We find the latter option – direct to screen output – to be a much more convenient way to use the device.

The GCQuad is the best photometric launch monitor today, and it won the Golf Digest Editors’ Choice Award three times in a row. It provides unparalleled tracking capabilities and accuracy indoors, and performs beautifully well outdoors.

If you decide to get the optional Club Head Analysis (+4000 dollars) and/or the Putting Analysis (+ 2500 dollars) Adoons, you will get access to additional readings to cover all types of shots; this is especially useful for professional golfers, coaches and club fitters.

The included FSX 2020 simulation software includes five playable courses (Broken Tree, Linfield National, Willow Crest, Bayou Golf & Fishing Club, and Teton Pines) as well as plenty of challenges and features that will satisfy even the most demanding golf professionals.

The package also includes the Net Return V2 golf net and the SIGPRO Turf Mat, which are both easy to pack and transport, mainly thanks to the included duffle bag for the net. This is a highly portable package that you can take with you wherever you go.

What’s included

  • Foresight Sports GCQuad launch monitor & accessories (Power Adapter & Cable, USB-C cable, Alignment stick, & Club marker dispenser)
  • FSX 2020 software
  • Pro or Home version of the Net Return Golf Net
  • Side netting
  • SIGPRO 6′ x 10′ hitting mat
  • Duffle bag (to store the net)

Pros

  • Professional-grade launch monitor with powerful hardware
  • More than enough metrics provided with extreme accuracy
  • Long battery life
  • Usable indoors or out
  • Four high-speed cameras that won’t miss the slightest details of your shots
  • The whole package is easily portable and transportable
  • The add-ons allow you to get extra readings and features without the need of any additional hardware

Cons

  • Launch monitor more suitable for professionals and club fitters because of the high price of the unit and its software add-ons.

The Foresight Sports GCQuad Training Package is the ultimate practice system, one that will best help you practice and improve your golf skills, be it indoors or out. It is an outstanding package that costs a lot of money and won’t be affordable for most golfers; however, if you aspire to reach the professional leagues or want to use the package professionally for teaching or club-fitting purposes, this is the ideal system for you.

#10 - Building a Custom Simulator System with Carlofet.com

golfsimulatordesigncarlofet

Our last pick is the DIY full golf simulator builder from our friends at Carl’s Place. What we love most about these guys is their attention to the little details in every single package they build; everything is made from good quality materials to ensure durability, and the designs are aesthetically pleasing. Their system builder is no exception, as it allows you to pick the materials, sizes, and features of all the package components. You will have a unique setup in the end.

You will start with the choice of the type of package you want to customize, either a home golf simulator or a pro package. For our purpose, we picked the “home sim” option. You are immediately directed to a new tab where you get to choose the material of the hitting screen; here, you have three options, from the more budget-friendly “standard” material to the “premium” option that offers the best quality, durability and image. In between the two, you get a mid-range option labeled “preferred”, which offers the best value for the money. Make your choice based on your budget.

Next is the enclosure size tab, where you choose a size and aspect ratio for your screen; you can choose between 4:3, 16:9, 16:10, 1:1, and custom ratios. The most widespread ratios for simulators are 4:3, 16:9 and 16:10, and for those you get a screen size of between 87″ x 116″ and 115″ x 154″ for 4:3. For 16:10, the size ranges between 87″ x 140″ and 96″ x 154″; the 16:9 ratio offers a single size of 87″ x 155″ with a diagonal size of 164″. You need to check your available space to see which screen and enclosure size fits in it. We chose a smaller 16:10 size for the sake of our topic (sims fitting in a small space).

After that, it’s time to choose the enclosure depth, which ranges between 18″ and 59″. You need to decide based on your available space again, as more depth needs more room length, and provides protection from errant shots as well as better image quality. You will then be asked to choose your enclosure accessories, with a pipe framing kit to make the enclosure installation easier, a foam insert kit to absorb the shot and prevent balls from ricocheting in case they hit the frame, and an optional pair of 8′ net wall extensions to help keep the golf balls inside the enclosure area. Spend according to your dedicated budget!

The following step is choosing your launch monitor, where you have a limited selection of six popular units: Skytrak, Mevo Plus, the Approach R10, the Full Swing Kit, Uneekor’s Eye XO, and QED. There is also an option named “bring your own launch monitor” which we believe to be very useful in case you want to go for a monitor that’s not included on the website. That’s the option we went for.

Selecting a simulator software is the next step, and you can choose between the standard subscription of E6 Connect, GSPro or Creative Golf 3D. We believe the suggested software is good, but we would have loved to see more diversity in this section. Remember, though, that if you choose to “bring your own launch monitor”, you probably have software included with your purchase, or you can upgrade it to whichever you prefer.

The hitting mat is next, and you can pick one of three propositions: Carl’s Anti-Fatigue mat, Truestrike golf mats or Country Club Elite Golf Mats, which are the more professional options. Once again, you can “bring your own golf mat” if you have something else in mind, which is a really cool feature.

You can again “bring your own simulator projector” or choose between five different short-throw projectors with prices ranging between 799 dollars and as high as 4,899 dollars for the higher-end 4K option. We suggest you select one of those that fits your budget, unless you already own a projector or have a different model in mind.

The last step in the DIY process is “Make It Perfect”, where you get the chance to add accessories to make the simulation experience even better. Here, you can add a ceiling mount for the projector to keep it safe from errant shots. You can also add a Carl’s Divot Strip to replace the one in your hitting mat for a better feel and more comfort; you can choose between a “soft” and a “softer” option.

Pros

  • The Carl’s Place design is visually appealing.
  • Good quality materials overall.
  • Everything is customizable (meaning everything!)
  • The DIY sim builder is well-designed and easy to use, even for those who aren’t tech-savvy
  • Possible to choose one of the suggested products or “Bring Your Own”, which is awesome!

Cons

  • Limited selection of software and launch monitors; but again, you get to “bring your own”

The customization option at Carl’s Place is one of the most complete and interesting DIY simulator builders we’ve ever had the chance to test. Everything can be customized, from the screen size, aspect ratio, and even materials. The possibility of bringing your own components if you are not convinced with the ones suggested is the icing on the cake. This is the best option for those wishing to own their unique setup.

Buyers Guide: Things to Consider Before Buying a Golf Simulator Package for Small Space

There are some factors that you must consider before making your final choice. We recommend you carefully go through each of them to decide, with certainty, the ideal home golf simulator for you.

#1 Size

room size

Obviously, size is the first and foremost criterion you need to take into consideration with the purchase of your next package.

Since our main concern is using packages in a small space or room, then the biggest and greatest options are out of the question. These require large spaces and depths of up to 24 feet.

Typically, the absolute minimum space you need to set up a simulator is around 10’W x 10’L x 8.5’H; This is the space that most packages will require to be installed in. If your room dimensions are below the absolute minimum, especially the 10 feet width mark, then the idea of owning a simulator at home may be a no-go. Make sure you look for the minimum and recommended space requirements of any package you consider, and then compare those to your available space to avoid nasty surprises.

Getting a system to work in a space that is smaller than what it was intended for will require a lot of thinking and creativity; and even then, the results may not be the best. For example, you may go with a partial setup that comprises fewer components (not the entire package) just to practice your swing. You could also choose to practice using your shorter clubs only, even though it seems a bit unnatural, but it may be your last resort.

Another thing you must consider is your height and that of all the people that you’re planning to enjoy your investment with. Bring the tallest member of the group and make sure he/she can swing their club freely and comfortably without hitting the side walls or ceiling. This is all part of ensuring no one (or thing) is hit by a fast-swung club and avoiding any potential accidents.

Finally, Your golf swing style and plane, as well as your preferred hand will also affect the space you need to play indoor virtual golf. Golfers with a wide swing plane will need a wider room to swing comfortably, and for some reason, left-handed players tend to require more width because their swing is usually more open.

#2 Detection Technology

Skytrak Golf Simulator

This is another very important factor that’s worth considering. Different packages, and more specifically launch monitors, employ different tracking & detection technologies to provide readings of your shots that are then used as the basis of the whole simulation process.

Each type of technology can be used in different conditions and require different room lengths for the tracking to be flawless. Some brands combine different types of technology into the same device to make the readings more accurate.

First off, photometric monitors use super high-speed cameras that take pictures and videos at speeds that reach thousands of frames per second (FPS) of your entire swing and provide accurate data about your club and ball.

Examples of photometric launch monitors include Skytrak, Uneekor’s products, Foresight Sports’ entire lineup, etc. Some of those monitors are highly portable and can be used anywhere (indoors or out), while others are fixed overhead monitors that are mounted on the room ceiling, never to be moved again.

The good thing about photometric packages is that they perform ideally indoors and don’t require too much space to work flawlessly. The portable versions will work outdoors, too, but they perform much better inside. That makes them perfect candidates for indoor golf simulator packages.

Second, Doppler Radar monitors use microwaves that bounce off the moving object (the ball, in our case) to determine its velocity. The concept is usually referred to as “the Doppler Effect.”

Doppler Radar packages include monitors from Full Swing, Trackman (PGA Tour favorite), FlightScope, and the surprisingly tiny but good Garmin Approach R10. Doppler Radar technology is the most accurate among all three available today, but there is a hiccup: Radar-based systems perform much better outdoors, where they have enough ball flight time to do all the necessary calculations. If used indoors, radar systems will require a very long room to be accurate, 14 to 16 feet at the very least, with that number sometimes reaching up to 24 feet. For a small room, this may not (and won’t) be ideal, so bear that in mind.

Last is Infrared technology, which can be used exclusively indoors because the sun’s rays drastically affect the IR sensors that give numbers that are all over the place. This type of system uses rows of infrared sensors that track mainly the movement of your golf club, making it possible to practice with real golf balls, foam practice ones or no balls at all (Perfect for our limited space context).

The main manufacturer of purely Infrared systems is Optishot. The brand is famous for making some of the most affordable golf simulators that provide a lot of fun for the whole family. An Optishot 2 simulator package will be a good choice for those on a tight budget, and it will fit in a smaller room without any issues.

The fact that an IR system only tracks the club affects its accuracy, as it is the main downside of IR packages: they are less accurate than the other two types.

#3 Budget

money

Simply put, the more you pay, the more you get in terms of quality and software and hardware components. Pricier packages are usually more accurate, realistic and immersive than the cheaper options.

However, not all golfers will be able to invest five-figure numbers in a home simulator; that’s why you should set a maximum budget that you can invest and then see which systems fall under that budget limit.

After that, you can choose the more suitable package based on things like preferences and/or limitations. The goal is to strike a balance between price and performance and try to squeeze the most possible features without exceeding your budget.

In this article, we reviewed packages that suit different budgets, so everyone will most probably find a package to use at home. Fortunately, all the main sim manufacturers offer financing options to help you pay for your new package over an extended period of time. Going for a financing option will help you get a much better package that you may not be able to afford otherwise. The interest rates can be as low as 0%.

Rain Or Shine Golf have all their plans listed over here.

#4 Screen Vs. Net

golf hitting net

This is something else you may consider while choosing a package. You could either go for a full package that uses a screen and projector combo (along with other basic components) to run and display the simulation; or you can save a bit of money and opt for a net package, one that only includes a launch monitor for tracking your shots, a net to stop the ball and a hitting mat. Both options offer advantages and drawbacks.

Hitting into a net is usually much more affordable than using a full setup; it also offers a lot of portability because the fewer components can be easily unmounted and moved around. The package can also be used outdoors, on the lawn or backyard when the weather allows it, offering much more flexibility.

Just hook the launch monitor to your computer or smart device to get real-time feedback and data on every single shot you take. A net system also requires very little space to use, which makes it perfect for use in small spaces.

On the other hand, a full setup will cost much more because of the additional components, but it will also offer much more in terms of realism and immersion. The processed data is turned into a virtual simulation that is displayed, along with your crucial metrics, on the simulator screen.

The downside is that most full setups are not designed with portability in mind, and they require some time and effort to disassemble and install in a different location. Also, they usually require a larger space. Still, for some golfers, having a system with all the bells and whistles is totally worth the extra money and effort.

Depending on what you intend to do with your package and what you consider to be important, you can choose either of the two options.

#5 Software

The Golf Club Simulator

Deciding on what specific golf simulator software to use can either mean saving money or paying much more for your simulation package.

Most golf launch monitors (used as the core of the simulation process) usually come with a limited version of the software. It offers access to a virtual driving range, some challenges and game modes, and sometimes access to some complete virtual golf courses.

The included features will help you get enough data and practice to improve your game, and many golfers will be happy with the software that comes with the system (out of the box) and won’t feel the need to upgrade it or invest more money.

If you are one of those golfers who want to play the most famous courses like Pebble Beach or The Old Course at St. Andrews at home, you will need to pay more for an extended sim software version that typically brings along more features like multiplayer and online play.

The following are some of our favorite simulation software available on the market today:

  • TGC 2019: This is our all-time favorite software plan because of the huge value it offers. You get multiple game modes and challenges, simultaneous multiplayer and online play support and much more for a one-time payment of 995 dollars. The cherry on top, with your purchase, you get access to a variety of golf courses to play (over 150,000). The huge community and a ranking system will help you choose the best courses to play. You can even create your own course to play, thanks to the included course builder.
  • FSX 2020 & FSX Play: These are Foresight Sports’ in-house simulator software options; they are fully compatible with all of the company’s launch monitors as well as the majority of other monitors from other brands. Both software offer a lot of features and game modes playable in ultra-realistic experience with resolutions going beyond 4K.
  • Skytrak‘s launch monitor is compatible with various software solutions, but it comes with a basic plan out of the box, which offers a limited number of features and game modes; The Game-Improvement Plan offers additional advanced features, challenges, progress tracking, minigames, numeric display, etc. and costs $99.95 a year. The Play & Improve Plan is their most advanced option, which includes WGT Golf; It adds full integration of WGT with full course play, online competitions, etc. for the annual fee of $199.95. Please note that Skytrak is compatible with other software, but all upgrades must be made through the Skytrak interface to avoid issues.
  • E6 Connect, by Trugolf, is probably the most advanced simulation software to date. It features plenty of useful features and outstanding graphics, making it extremely realistic and immersive. The standard PC version of E6 Connect can be purchased through a $2500 one-time payment, and it includes a clubhouse feature, player profiles, 17 practice facilities, and 27 playable courses. The standard IOS version of the software costs $1500 (15 courses, 17 practice ranges). The software is also accessible through monthly or yearly subscriptions.

Other software options include Creative Golf 3D, Awesome Golf, ProTee Golf 2.0, Fitness Golf, GSPro, Jack Nicklaus Perfect Golf, Perfect Parallel Golf, etc. Before choosing a package, check the features that the included software supports and if it is compatible with your favorite software.

#6 Portability

carrying boxes

Do you want to install your package once and keep it in the same location, or do you intend to move it from time to time around different places? Do you travel a lot and would love to have a portable package that you may take with you on your continuous road trips so as to practice whenever you have some free time?

All these questions must be answered for you to choose the best package. If portability is something crucial to you, then you can either go with a partial setup or a smaller one that takes no time to install and disassemble, or better yet, get a simulator package with a retractable screen for more convenience. You will be able to save both time and money by choosing this kind of system.

If you believe portability is not important for you, or you want to dedicate a specific room at home for your virtual golf pleasure, then you can opt for a good system and enjoy golf simulation without any compromises, the way it was meant to be!

You can even get yourself one of those awesome packages with overhead launch monitors like the Uneekor Eye XO, QED or Foresight Sports GCHawk; these are not cheap monitors, but they offer very good performance and accuracy levels while helping you save a lot of ground space, allowing for a much better overall experience.
